The production of microalgae in industrial symbioses
The NUTRITIVE partner Algae for Fuel (A4F) presented the project in the CYTED – Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development Workshop “Economia circular da água – simbiose indústria e indústria-setor urbano”. The event took place in Lisbon th 18th of September of 2024.
The workshop “Circular water economy – industry and industry-urban sector symbioses” aims to explore the boundaries and synergies between the industrial and urban sectors in the circular water economy. It included the presentation and discussion of strategies and advanced treatment processes to enhance industry-industry, industry-urban, industry-agriculture and urban-agriculture symbioses in the circularity associated with water. The topics covered in the 14 presentations and debate by 18 Ibero-American academic and professional experts include: water reuse, including direct potable reuse by industry; the control of contaminants of emerging concern; the recovery of metals, nutrients and other value-added products, e.g. from the wine and cork industries; the production of microalgae and green hydrogen; the production of renewable gases from waste; the recovery of biosolids and the management of industrial inflows to urban wastewater systems. The workshop was organized as part of the CYTED RECIRCULA Network (https://www.cyted.org/RECIRCULA) “Circular Economy in Ibero-American Industry: Waste in Value-Added Products”, in which 24 partners from 8 countries, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Portugal, all represented at the workshop, take part.
A4F researcher Sara M. Badenes gave the oral presentation entitled “The production of microalgae in industrial symbioses” in which she presented an overview of th NUTRITIVE project. A4F has over 20 years of accumulated experience in research and development in the algae sector and in algae production (up to industrial scale). A4F specializes in the design, construction, operation and transfer of commercial-scale algae production units, using different technologies that best suit its clients’ businesses. A4F participates in the most advanced research and demonstration projects, funded at national and European level, in cooperation with the most prestigious universities and centers. A4F is technology-oriented, specializing in the production and processing of algae for various applications, such as food, feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, wastewater treatment, soil remediation, bioplastics, biofuels, among others. Algae have multiple high-value applications, their production process and integration with traditional industries can guarantee economic and environmental benefits, in a circular economy philosophy. A4F is involved in several projects focused on the valorization of industrial effluents through their use in the production of microalgae, with a view to more sustainable processes.
